What is known as the ST. Nazaire-Raid today, is certainly one of the many instances of interesting British ideas for special operations during the Second World War. In order to deny the German Kriegsmarine the use of the St. Nazaire drydock for operating their large surface vessels (i.e Tirpitz) in the Atlantic more freely, it was (to no joy of the french I suppose) decided to stage a raid to put it out of action. For demolishing the drydocks gates, an old Wickes-class destroyer aquired from the USA was stripped down and "Wallace and Gromit-ed" into a floating bomb/commando carrier. The operation was carried out and the HMS Campbeltown obviously destroyed in the process. The whole thing is about as wild an affair as might be guessed from the description, so I´d really encourage anyone not familiar to read about the incident.
Flyhawk offers the HMS Campbeltown as 1/700 special edition kit depicting her final fit and I managed top get it for a reasonable price, so I went for it. The kit includes PE, some microscopic brass parts an even PE-figures of commandos riding/disembarking the ship. As such this little kit should be an interesting endeavour...
