So I painted it with a Krylon rattle can, but managed to produce a few bubbles on the roof and the hood. Polishing and respraying will be next. And yes, painting before assembly would have been the sensible thing to do, but that option was foreclosed because I soldered the cab and frame together 50 years ago...

...and I am now embarrassed to say that the result is an unholy mess, since the paint seeped under the tape and also reacted with the adhesive to produce blobs of red goo. I suppose I will try scraping it off the places where it doesn't belong, and repriming those areas. If that doesn't work I shall have to strip it all off and start again - perhaps masking with fluid would be better. Live and learn.
